The fortress of Masada overlooks the Dead Sea. It has been invested with spiritual significance for the people of Israel, as there they once stood against a mighty empire.  Once a palace and refuge for Herod the Great, named King of the Jews by the Romans, this massive plateau on the eastern edge of the Judean Desert is better known as the location of a Roman siege against Jewish rebels in 74 AD. The rebellion had failed, but Masada since became an emblem of spiritual and national pride.
