Gamla was an ancient Jewish city on the Golan Heights, overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Frequently referred to as the “Masada of the North,” it was site of a Roman siege during the Great Revolt of the 1st century CE. One of the oldest synagogues ever found was located at Gamla, whose remains can still be visited today. The synagogue community was probably active in Jesus’ day, and the Messiah may have preached there as he “went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues” (Matthew 4:23). Standing on the cliff overlooking Gamla, one can look down the valley on the left and see Capernaum on the North end of the Sea of Galilee. Gamla is not just a symbol of the heroism of a determined few against a mighty empire. It is also an integral piece of the landscape of the Holy Land. This unique, limited-edition painting depicts ancient Gamla, rich in spiritual and historical significance.
